Ambode task youths on technical, vocational education

Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Thursday urged youths to embrace technical and vocational education to breed quality entrepreneurs that could compete effectively in local and global business terrain.
Ambode, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule, made the call at the 3rd Annual Lagos State Enterprise Day, organised by the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB).
The programme was entitled: 'Promoting Trade Skills for Improved Productivity in Entrepreneurship Development'.
According to him, brighter days lie ahead as his administration will give youths all the necessary support to succeed.
''Our administration is committed to promoting and encouraging the acquisition of technical and vocational education as major instruments for youth empowerment, job and wealth creation.
''The newly-created Ministry of Employment and Wealth Creation is in fulfilment of our electoral promise to make life better for Lagosians.
''The Ministry will identify and work with all stakeholders to give identity to those in search of jobs and create business support centres.
''I advise young entrepreneurs to be best at their businesses, put proper structures in place, seek continuous knowledge, take risks and be strategic. The sky is your limit, '' he said.
In a keynote address, Mrs Alessandra Lustrati, the Private Sector Development Adviser for Lagos with the Department for International Development of the British Government, said being an entrepreneur could be natural or nurtured.
Lustrati said entrepreneurship was an innate or inborn talent and could also be acquired through learning, encouragement and the right environment.
She advised young upcoming entrepreneurs to identify and build their skills and also come up with business visions and ideas.
The adviser also urged them to improve their access to information, resources, finance and technology, to become successful in life.
Also speaking, Mr Collins Uwadia, a product of Government Technical College, Ikotun, 2003 set, said that technical education was a way to become self-reliant in life.
Owadia, who is now the Training Administrator of Slot Skills Acquisition Centre, Nigeria, urged technical and vocational students to be focused and goal-driven.
According to Owadia, technical education will make a person creative, innovative, empower him, create wealth for him and also decongest the corporate world.
In his remarks, Mr Olawunmi Gasper, Executive Secretary of LASTVEB said that 60 per cent of the huge youth unemployment could be addressed through technical skills development and entrepreneurship.
Gasper said that innovative solutions that could transform the economy of the nation were imperative with the huge youth unemployment in the country.
He said there was the need to engage the private sector in making more investments in the youth, using Technical and Vocational Education (TVE) as a tool to inspire them to achieve their full potential.
''I call for the support of the private sector with the Lagos State Government to establish 'industry sector specific cluster' in each of the divisions of Lagos.
''A synergy between the State Government and the private sector can produce the desired high quality technical skills for the fast growing hospitality, construction, transportation, manufacturing, communication and retailing sector,'' he said.
Gasper expressed disappointment that TVE, which drives industrial development and growth of the economy was not by law a beneficiary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.
He called for more commitment by the private sector and corporate organisations to redirect their corporate social responsibilities to support youth entrepreneurs.
According to him, such gesture is the best route toward technical skills development, wealth creation and youth employment.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the immediate past Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babatunde Fashola, in 2013 declared July 23 every year as Lagos State Enterprise Day.
The Day is a day set aside to address the issue of entrepreneurship development among technical college students by bringing them in contact with the entrepreneurs in the private sector.
Such contact is for interaction and monitoring sessions aimed at inculcating in the students the experiences of building up sustainable business.
NAN also reports that the programme featured the inauguration of the Young Entrepreneurs' Club, aimed at providing motivation and guidance to the aspiring young business leaders.
