The world's first malaria vaccine under way

The world's first malaria vaccine has cleared one of the final hurdles prior to being approved for use in Africa. The European Medicines Agency gave a positive scientific opinion after assessing its safety and effectiveness. It represents a 'green light' for the Mosquirix jab, developed by GlaxoSmithKline. The World Health Organization will consider later this year whether to recommend it for children, among whom trials have yielded mixed results. Malaria kills around 584,000 people a year worldwide, most of them children under five in sub-Saharan Africa. 'Dream come true' Mosquirix, otherwise known as the RTS,S vaccine, is the first against a parasitic infection in humans. Dr Ripley Ballou, head of research at GSK vaccines, said: "This is a hugely significant moment. I've been working on this vaccine for 30 years and this is a dream come true." Pastor trying to play Jesus Christ dies

Tragedy struck in a Zimbabwean village after a pastor, Shamiso Kanyama, died after he was allegedly buried alive on his instructions. According to reports, Kanyama had asked his followers, five members of the same family, to bury him alive so that he could summon more cleansing powers to help cleanse their house of evil spirits. As the story goes, the members of the family, charged with the murder of the prophet, invited the pastor to their home in the village of Mazonde to help cleanse their home, believed to be plagued by mysterious deaths. The accused family members, identified as Leanmore Mutero, Tonderai Muswere, Michael Muchengeti, Manasa Mutero and Nicholas Mutero, according to Zed 24 News, the country’s local newspaper, were charged before the High Court in Harare for murder. Ambode pledges to protect women's rights

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule pledged his commitment to vigorously pursue programmes that would guarantee and protect the rights of women in the State at the commemoration of this year’s Public Service Day in Lagos. Non-adherence To Traffic Laws Worsens Lagos Traffic Congestion – Ambode

Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Thursday identified non-adherence to traffic laws and indiscriminate parking of vehicles due to inadequate parking space as factors which contributed to traffic congestion on Lagos roads. Ambode, who was represented by Dr Idiat Adebule, the Deputy Governor, made the observation at the inauguration of the Ikoyi Club 1938 Multi-Storey Car Park in Lagos. Gov. Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos State on Sunday urged corporate organisations, NGOs and individuals to invest in cancer awareness, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and research to reduce the burden of the disease. Ambode, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Oluranti Adebule, made the plea at a programme to celebrate his birthday, tagged ‘The Banquet of Stars Against Cancer’. Beware of another Ebola outbreak - IDRIS warns

A former Commissioner for Health in Lagos State, Dr Jide Idris, on Thursday urged the Federal Government to take adequate precautionary measures against the return of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). Idris gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos against the backdrop of the reported return of the disease in Liberia and Sierra Leone. He also called for more vigilance at the nation’s border posts to prevent the entry of people who might be infected with the virus. “Everybody is talking about Ebola, Ebola Ebola. Osibanjo decries state of legal education

The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo on Sunday urged legal professionals to reform and renovate the law profession in the country to meet international standards. Osinbajo made the call at the inauguration ceremony of the Ultra Modern Sir Adetokunbo Ademola Dinning Hall of the Law School, Lagos. The hall was remodeled and refurbished by the South Atlantic Petroleum Ltd. (SAPETRO), founded by a retired Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Theophillus Danjuma. Osinbajo, a professor of law, said that the legal profession might continue to suffer serious decline and lose its pride of place in the affairs of the country, if fundamental reforms were not implemented. ”This is an institution where we teach the law, teach character and teach discipline. PHD urges Buhari to ignore Obama on gay issues

The Project for Human Development, PHD, a Civil Society Organisation, on Sunday urged President Muhammadu Buhari not to listen to the U.S. government on issues of gay rights, so as to protect the laws and values of Nigeria. The call was made at a rally in Lagos, against the backdrop of Mr. Buhari’s visit to the US on Monday. The theme of the rally was, “Gay Marriage: Obama, Please Leave Nigeria Alone”. Embrace dialogue rather than strikes - Ambode urges

Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Wednesday called for peaceful and non-disruptive means of resolving disputes in tertiary institutions. Ambode made the call at the 35th convocation ceremony of the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED), Ijanikin, Lagos. The Governor, who is also the Moderator of the college, was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule. He said that dialogue and constructive engagement should be explored in resolving disputes, rather than resorting to strikes. Committee calls for review of Lagos LGs’administration

The Committee on Reformation of Local Government administration in Lagos State on Friday called for a review of the functions, revenue and laws regulating the operations of Local Government in the State. Mr Nurudeen Ojora-Adejiyan, Chairman of the committee, made the call while submitting its report to Mrs Shade Jaji, Lagos State Head of Service, in Ikeja. The  News Agency of Nigeria  reports that on June 29, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, inaugurated the committee to address the administrative governance structure and service delivery processes in LGAs across the state, for better grassroots service delivery. The committee was given a deadline of two-weeks to submit its report.
