Spending time on smartphone can improve mental health – Study

Image
A new study says spending a few minutes on your smartphone each day can improve your mental health. In the study, about 100 people were asked to download a group of apps, called “IntelliCare,” from Google Play that were designed to help reduce anxiety and depression. According to a report published on Jan 5, in the Journal of Medical Internet Research, after eight weeks of using the apps several times a day, all of the participants reported significant improvements in their mental health. “Using digital tools for mental health is emerging as an important part of our future,” lead study author David Mohr, a professor of preventive medicine at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, said in a statement. The apps “are designed to help the millions of people who want to get [mental health] support but can’t get to a therapist’s office,” Mohr said. The researchers included people in the study if they had symptoms of depression or anxiety based on their responses...

Recession did not affect the drinking habits if many Nigerians. On daily basis, the beer-parlours are always filled and  bubbling with people. Nigerians can enjoy life for Africa, no matter the circumstances.  That is what makes us Nigerians. Nigerian Breweries recorded sales of almost N300 billion in 2016 while Guinness is expected to record sales of N275 billion totaling almost =N=600 Billion (About $3billion) which is about 3% of our GDP. That is about 3 billion bottles of beer and when distributed across 170 million people is about 200 bottles per person a year. The average Nigerian is either a Christian or a Muslim. *Both religions enjoined adherents to avoid alcohol.* So, who drank =N=600 billion worth of alcohol in one year? A country with more churches and mosques than anywhere else on the continent. *Please who drank it?* This is interesting because it does not include sales from other breweries, Paraga and Other Assorted foreign and local drinks ...

Issues around Menstrual Laws in Zambia

Image
DISCUSSING female menstruation publicly is something of a taboo in Zambia. This is no doubt why a provision in the country’s labour law that allows female workers to take off one day a month is known as Mother’s Day, even though it applies to all women, whether or not they have children. The legal definition is not precise; women can take the day when they want and do not have to provide any medical justification, leading some to question the provision, BBC reported. “I think it’s a good law because women go through a lot when they are on their menses (periods),” says Ndekela Mazimba, who works in public relations. Ms Mazimba is neither married nor does she have children but she takes her Mother’s Day every month because of her gruelling period pains. “You might find that on the first day of your menses, you’ll have stomach cramps – really bad stomach cramps. You can take whatever painkillers but end up in bed the whole day. “And sometimes, you find that someone is irritable bef...

Gbajabiamila said: “It cannot always be about representation and legislative work, it is also about caring for those around us,  those  we represent and even those we do not represent. “I urge members of state and national assemblies to reach out and give support to the people they represent so that they can continually feel the presence of government and the impact of democracy.’’ Gbajabiamila spoke during a visit to the Maternal and Childcare Centre at Randle General Hospital and the Heart of Gold Children’s Hospice, both in Surulere, Lagos as part of activities to usher in the New Year.
