Embrace dialogue rather than strikes - Ambode urges

Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Wednesday called for peaceful and non-disruptive means of resolving disputes in tertiary institutions.
Ambode made the call at the 35th convocation ceremony of the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED), Ijanikin, Lagos.
The Governor, who is also the Moderator of the college, was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule.
He said that dialogue and constructive engagement should be explored in resolving disputes, rather than resorting to strikes.
According to him, resorting to strikes has impacted negatively, not only on the academic programmes, but also on the quality of products of the tertiary institutions.
''As a government, we will not take the issue of workers' welfare for granted. We will also pay prompt attention to issues that may be bought to our attention before they degenerate to industrial dispute.
''I, therefore, urge all academic and non-academic unions in our tertiary institutions to always take advantage of these opportunities and ensure industrial peace and harmony on our campuses.
''We are committed to making significant investment in the education sector to avail our youths the best opportunities to compete globally through acquisition of the right skills and competencies in our education facilities, '' he said.
Ambode also urged the graduating students to be shining lights to others and remain good ambassadors of the citadel of learning.
''As teachers of the students at the basic level of education, I urge you to join hands with other honourable teachers to effect change in the next generation of Nigerians who look up to you as models, '' he said.
In his remarks, Mr Wasiu Bashorun, AOCOED Provost, appealed for 65 per cent increase in the monthly subvention of the college.
Bashorun said that such bail-out would help the college settle its outstanding debts and increase productivity of staff and corporate performance of the college.
According to him, this issue has continuously threatened the peaceful industrial harmony of the college in the recent past.
''I also urge the State Government to assist us in addressing issues of pension liabilities, infrastructural expansion and development as well as the pending request of Certificate of Occupancy for a land allocated to the college since 2009.
''Addressing these issues will improve the standing of the college as a major player in the repositioning of Teacher Education in Lagos State and the nation at large.
''We believe in the vision of Your Excellency to transform the education sector and strongly key into that vision to make the college the nucleus of modern Teacher Education service delivery in the country.
''We are poised to putting the college in the forefront of efforts toward expanding access to higher education for millions of people in Lagos, Nigeria and beyond, '' Bashorun said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a total of 3,028 Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) graduates of AOCOED bid the institution farewell at the convocation.
NAN also reports that the Provost Award of Best All Round Performance was given to Mr Oluwaseun Okegade with grade points of 4.28.
