Committee calls for review of Lagos LGs’administration

The Committee on Reformation of Local Government administration in Lagos State on Friday called for a review of the functions, revenue and laws regulating the operations of Local Government in the State.
Mr Nurudeen Ojora-Adejiyan, Chairman of the committee, made the call while submitting its report to Mrs Shade Jaji, Lagos State Head of Service, in Ikeja.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that on June 29, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, inaugurated the committee to address the administrative governance structure and service delivery processes in LGAs across the state, for better grassroots service delivery.
The committee was given a deadline of two-weeks to submit its report.
Ojora-Adejiyan also called for a functional template to assess the performance of LGs, based on available resources, standardisation of departments and sanctions on officials and LG personnel involved in fraudulent practices.
Ojora-Adejiyan said, ”The committee cutting edge consultations aimed at ensuring that inputs of critical stakeholders are enlisted.
”We made startling findings that shows that the LG system has become a shadow of itself, grappling with structural, funding and administrative problems.
”It was discovered that there had been inadequate community participation in LG affairs and this has created a huge service gap with adverse effects on its service delivery capacity to the people.
”We, however, recommend a review of the LG laws, funding, as well as involving Community Development Associations and other stakeholders in the planning and execution of policies.
”We also recommend that there should be no mass transfer of LG personnel to the State Service.
”The welfare package of Obas and Chiefs should also be enhanced for more responsive participation in LG revenue mobilization, security and other auxiliary functions.”
While receiving the report on behalf of the Governor, Jaji thanked the committee for submitting its report promptly.
