Non-adherence To Traffic Laws Worsens Lagos Traffic Congestion – Ambode
Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Thursday identified non-adherence to traffic laws and indiscriminate parking of vehicles due to inadequate parking space as factors which contributed to traffic congestion on Lagos roads.
Ambode, who was represented by Dr Idiat Adebule, the Deputy Governor, made the observation at the inauguration of the Ikoyi Club 1938 Multi-Storey Car Park in Lagos.
He urged motorists and organisations to work on both areas to ease traffic flow in the state.
”Non adherence to traffic laws and lack of parking space in most areas which leads to indiscriminate parking of cars, has been a major factor contributing to traffic congestion on Lagos roads.
”I urge road users to adhere to traffic laws, as well as organisations to ensure they provide parking space, to avoid indiscriminate parking of cars and ensure free flow of traffic,’’ he said.
The governor commended the Club for its effort in reducing traffic congestion and urged other organisations to emulate them.
According to him, the state government, on its part, is committed to ensuring accident-free roads, safety of road users and unimpeded flow of traffic in the state.
He urged road users to abide by the State traffic laws to ensure safety and free flow of traffic on the roads.
Ambode said that traffic rules were primarily designed to prevent and reduce road accidents and clear obstructions on the highways, to ensure free flow of traffic.
In his remarks, retired Gen. Mufu Balogun , Chairman of the Club, said that the idea of the car park construction started in 2002 to address the problem of parking space in the area.
”The parking problem faced by members on daily basis was obvious to all as the then Mulliner Road was always jam-packed with cars, leading to hectic journeys.
”The rigour and pain felt by members who reside on the mainland made them stay away from the club as they could not access and enjoy the facilities.
”This project being inaugurated today was constructed at the sum of over N2 billion to ease traffic flow around Ikoyi area, ” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the car park complex has four floors with nine parking levels capable of accommodating 295 cars.
