The Igbo Conscience group canvasses inter-ethnic relations

The Igbo Conscience (TIC), a nonpartisan group on Wednesday called for enhanced inter- ethnic relationship to promote peaceful coexistence and national unity.

Mr Onyekachi Ubani, Chairman of the group made the call at a media briefing in Lagos to formerly inaugurate the group.

Ubani described inter-ethnic relations as interactions between different ethnic groups. The interaction processes can take place through trading, marriages, burials amongst several others.

''For any country to develop economically, politically and socially, its various ethnic groups or nationalities must be at peace with one another.

'' Hence, no nation can develop in the atmosphere of rancour and acrimony.

''The Igbo Conscience group (TIC) is a child of necessity birthed out of the increasing intolerance that has marked the relationship among the various ethnic nationalities that make up Nigeria.

''Particularly, Ndigbo have been objects of scurrilous attacks for reasons that are located in dangerous politics leading to the last general elections.

''With the fear of xenophobia threatening to catch up with Nigeria, we feel it has gotten to a time Nigerians must come together and meld a country where no one is oppressed, ''he said.

Ubani said that the group would develop a broad based approach to smoothen relationship between Ndigbo and other ethnic groups in the country.

''TIC aims at promoting harmonious coexistence between Igbos and indigenes of their host communities where they live. We believe this is paramount to national unity and integration.

''No ethnic group can survive without seeking help from the other(s). We have come to an age where independency has given way to dependency.

''No man is an island of himself. The various ethnic groups that made up the Nigerian society irrespective of their belief system, tradition and religion there is need for them to co-exist peacefully for the development of the country, '' he said.
