Reducing Malaria Burden in Nigeria through Research by Lucy Osuizigbo

Image
The war against malaria has been on for long, but still seems far from ending as malaria remains endemic and life-threatening in developing countries including Nigeria. Medical experts blame malaria prevalence on a number of factors including inadequate funds, drug counterfeiting, malaria resistance to drugs, mosquitos’ resistance to insecticides and global warming. Analysts also identified dearth of research into malaria cure, as a major factor. Mr Chukwu Okoronkwo, Head, Advocacy, Communication and Social Mobilisation, National Malaria Elimination Programme, Federal Ministry of Health, is worried that although some donor-agencies have strongly supported malaria elimination, Nigeria still has huge gaps. “Quite a lot of donor-partners are supporting malaria elimination in the country but we still have huge gaps, which is why malaria is still endemic in Nigeria. “We are appealing to more donor-agencies to come in; governments should also increase their funding for malaria...

Gale of defections exposes selfish politicians, says Lawyer

By Lucy Osuizigbo Mr Wale Ogunade, a constitutional lawyer and president, Voters Awareness Initiative, said on Monday that the gale of defections in the nation’s polity was exposing selfish politicians. Ogunade told Luchee  in Lagos that many of the defections were about personal interests and not in the interest of the masses who elected them. He, however, noted that such defections were good for the nation’s polity and would strengthen democracy. According to him, these defections will help Nigerians make informed decisions at the 2019 general elections as they can separate the wheat from the chaff. “The gale of defections demonstrated that these politicians are not ready to work for the interest of Nigerians. “How can somebody just decide and say he does not think he has interest in a particular party, without even consulting with the electorate who elected him. “These are aggrieved politicians who have not done well in terms of living up to their mandates as el...
